Backup Netscape 4.79 Email & Address Books

Save a copy of all your Email, Bookmarks and Address books

Netscape 4.79 install app download
click on the link at the bottom of the page where it says "Download without SmartDownload."

Open "Windows Explorer" (program menu) and in the Program files folder on the "C" drive find the Netscape folder. Double click on it and there should be 2 sub-folders (Communicator and Users) > open the user folder and there should be a folder there with your profile name on it - that's the one, just copy the whole folder to another folder, zip drive or burn it on a cd. If you don't have a lot of email and a small address book, it may all fit on a floppy disk.

You can also create a Netscape profile on another computer - substitute this folder and all your stuff will be accessible there as well.

If you just want to copy your email, bookmarks and address books, just open the profile folder and in the first folder the Netscape bookmark file is labeled "Bookmark." The main address book is also located there but it's file name is "pab" (for personal address book). If you create additional address books the file name will be the same as what the address book is named (ex. if you create an address book called "friendsfamily" the file name will remain the same.

Next, inside that same folder there will be 4 sub-folders: Archive, Mail, Cache and News. Open the Mail folder and your inbox is the "Inbox" file. If you want the contents of the whole inbox from one computer to another, you'll have to create a different named folder and move that and then send the email to whatever folder you want. If you don't rename it and you have email in the inbox of the computer you're moving the inbox to, the 2nd computers Inbox (and it's contents) will be replaced by the new one.

To avoid this: On the toolbar above, click on Communicator and choose Tools in the drop-down menu and then click on "Message Center" in the tools drop-down. In Message Center, create a new folder and that new folder's icon will appear in the "Mail" file folder in Windows Explorer.

Next, click on an email topic in the Inbox > hold-down the control key and type an "A" to select all the email in the inbox and then click file in the toolbar above and send all the email to the new folder. You are now ready to copy the folder to a floppy, zip or cd and move it to another computer.
