Father of fallen Soldier to speak at ASD General meeting

Father of Jesus Suarez, Fallen Escondido Marine, to speakout for peace

Fernando Suarez will speak at the Activist San Diego General meeting on Monday, May 12th at 7 PM at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park, 2100 Park Blvd. and participate in the dialogue on the future direction of the peace movement. (The meeting will be bi-lingual with translation English-Spanish).
Marine Lance Cpl. Jesus A. Suarez del Solar was one of the first US soldiers killed in Iraq on March 27th, 2003. Jesus was from Escondido and his parents and new wife were devastated.
Jesus was part of the Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif. when killed in action in Iraq. Jesus posthumously became a citizen despite his father Fernando's strong feelings about it.* Jesus left behind a newborn son and his wife of 10 months. Jesus was just 20.
Since Jesus wanted to become a student, his dad has set up a non-profit foundation to give students scholarships and non-violent alternatives to military enlistment aimed especially at some of the 400 San Pasqual, Charter and Valley High Schools who cried at Jesus' memorial service. He wants our help in building this foundation.
Fernando has also offered to participate in the public rally organized by the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice which has a scheduled event on May 24th from 1-3 PM at the Balboa Park War Memorial, which will feature Veterans for Peace and other speakers and culture related to the Iraq War, veterans rights, the US occupation and the situation of Iraqi civilians.

A Terrible Reality of Names and Numbers Latinos contributed inmeasurably in the War on Iraq
* Marine Jesus Alberto Suarez, from Tijuana, Baja California, will become a posthumous citizen despite his father Fernando's strong feelings about it, and for the same reason many other immigrants have become citizens in the past: the fear of losing rights. It was reported recently by La Opinion newspaper that Jesus Suarez's widow, Seane Suarez, accepted the benefit for the security of their 15-month-old son Erik. "She decided to apply for posthumous citizenship because you never know about immigration laws, and she's afraid that their son might lose some rights for being an immigrant's son," Fernando Suarez said.
"Much less publicized was the angry reaction by Fernando Suarez del Solar, from Escondido, Calif., who rejected the idea of applying for citizenship for his son Jesus, who died March 27 in combat. Suarez has a big problem with this war and the contradictions involved in sending into battle young men and women who can't vote or hold military jobs that require security clearance."
