And he was willing to live in that tension of recognizing that the movement had made magnificent differences in the country, but that the country was still going to be resistant to the call to give up racism, to give up materialism, to give up militarism.

ASD News and Views

Will the politics of hope beat the politics of fear?

This election season and particularly the primaries have stirred up a very high level of political discussion. Many of us have our hopes raised, that the pendulum will swing back with a vengeance and that the losses suffered in the last 20 years will be recuperated and the momentum will continue to carry the country to the left.

It has been the hard work of grassroots activists, that got us to this point, especially in exposing the war, war profiteering, election fraud, corporate control and the attack on human and civil rights. What we must understand is that who ever becomes the candidate and who ever becomes the President, we cannot rest.

If the politics of hope beat the politics of fear, it will only be the hard work of grassroots activists, which will keep the wheels of progress moving forward. Hope will be dashed if the power of the people is not felt in the halls of power. We must empower our organizations and campaigns, educationals and actions, door-to-door and mass outreach. ASD is just one of the 100 vehicles, but we pledge to be there for the duration. In exchange we want you to support and become involved and help turn the tide. The next generation depends on us.

ASD calls on everyone to get involved in outreach for the 5th anniversary of the Iraq war by joining the March 15th peace rally in City Heights or in North County. The SDCPJ and ASD are leafleting and knocking on doors. Call us to get involved. 619-528-8383.

Food for Thought

"Curry: You don't agree with that? Has nothing do with the economy, the war? The spending on the war?
"Bush: I don't think so. I think actually, the spending on the war might help with jobs.
"Curry: Oh, yeah?
"Bush: Yeah, because we're buying equipment, and people are working. I think this economy is down because we built too many houses."

-- George W. Bush interviewed by NBC's Ann Curry 2/25/08
