ASD News and Views

TAX DAY - are you mad as hell?

Read my lips "No news on taxes". The cost of war and empire is hidden from us and the news media is certainly not telling us. But every year the War Resister's League lay out the cost in a revealing pie chart. www.warresisters.org/pages/piechart.htm "Total Outlays (Federal Funds): $2,650 billion, MILITARY: 54% and $1,449 billion, NON-MILITARY: 46% and $1,210 billion... Current military” includes Dept. of Defense ($653 billion), the military portion from other departments ($150 billion), and an additional $162 billion to supplement the Budget’s misleading and vast underestimate of only $38 billion for the “war on terror." Neither US society nor the world can afford this atrocious waste, not only of the precious human and monetary resources, but all the death and destruction wrought by militarism. In 2008 there will be several demonstrations on Tax Day (none initiated by ASD this year). We deserve to be piping mad, not at taxes, but at the waste and corruption that uses our tax money to perpetuate inequality and domination.

Please join ASD at the monthly membership meeting on Monday, April, 14th as we focus on the immigration actions set for May Day 2008. Also come here from ASD's Victor Calle about his nephew, the 4000th US soldier to die in Iraq. See you there! Please help ASD on Earth Day on April 20th. Call 619-528-8383 for info.

SUNDAY, APRIL 27, 4PM: Common Ground Theatre Presents Awaiting Judgment at the Bayview Baptist Church, Martin Luther King, Jr. Christian Center. Awaiting Judgment© depicts 20th Century theological giants, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in adjoining cells (at an undisclosed location and in an out-of-sync time period) discussing their faith journeys and the challenges that they had encountered. The two examine one another's actions and explore the decisions that led to their martyrdom. The exchange provides a prophetic, relevant and inspirational message that has resonated with audiences around the country. Written by Rev. Art Cribbs, former pastor of Christian Fellowship Congregational Church (San Diego), Awaiting Judgment© was inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King's prophetic sermon at Riverside Church in New York, April 4, 1967. The sermon challenged America to re-think its foreign policies and aggressive actions against the people of Vietnam – a message that is as poignant today as it was 40 years ago. More Info
