"Today, the truly decisive move is to undertake a profound, structural change of the current international economic and political order, an order which is anti-democratic, unjust, exclusive and unsustainable."

-- Cuban Vice President Esteban Lazo, wednesday said the current regional and world food crisis can not be kept in check with palliatives, but eliminating the exclusive and unjust economic order that prevails in the world today.

ASD News and Views

Are we prepared for a economic crisis?

The American people have been on a spending spree in an economy flush with borrowed money based on inflated home appraisals. Greedy bankers encouraged homeowners to refinance to keep the profit mill greased. Homeowners drained their home equity and spent it frivolously.

In a similar vein the Federal government borrowed trillions to feed the appetite of global corporations and Iraq war profiteers. War was good business for them. But now that debt in crushing America, the economy is in recession and could spiral downwards no matter who is President.

If the economy really tanks and throws millions into poverty and the unemployment lines, are left-progressives ready? We must take our responsibilities seriously. The right has steered economic discontent into xenophobia, militarism and anti-immigrant racism.

ASD believes that forming new avenues of communication will be vital to opposing the reactionaries and creating viable alternatives. ASD has applied to the FCC for 2 full-power FM radio stations and wants this newsletter to be a better source for and informed activism. We want your help, please let us know your thoughts, call 619-528-8383.

See you at the ASD General Meeting on Monday, May 12th to hear about the latest stage of the Blackwater battle.

Food for Thought

The United States has less than 5 percent of the world’s population. But it has almost a quarter of the world’s prisoners, 2.3 million in jail. Americans are locked up for crimes -- from writing bad checks to using drugs -- that would rarely produce prison sentences in other countries. And in particular they are kept incarcerated far longer than prisoners in other nations. Criminologists and legal scholars in other industrialized nations say they are mystified and appalled by the number and length of American prison sentences.

The lawyer for US vice-president [sic] Dick Cheney claimed today that the Congress lacks any authority to examine his behaviour on the job. The exception claimed by Cheney's counsel came in response to requests from congressional Democrats that David Addington, the vice-president's chief of staff, testify about his involvement in the approval of interrogation tactics used at Guantanamo Bay. Ruling out voluntary cooperation by Addington, Cheney lawyer Kathryn Wheelbarger said Cheney's conduct is "not within the [congressional] committee's power of inquiry".
