WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

Memorial Day

This Memorial Day we remember all those who have fallen in war. We remember all who have fallen needlessly in war and pledge to end that madness. Activists also choose to remember all who have given themselves and their lives for peace, for equality, for labor, for civil rights, for a new society, and for humanity and global sanity. May we memorialize the good fight rather than the fight itself.

Democracy is sustained and retained by many forms of activism and civic involvement. Voting every couple of years does not make a democracy. But voting is an aspect of the struggle for social justice and democracy. The Statewide Direct Primary Elections are just around the corner; June 3, 2008. We urge you to get informed, get involved and get out the vote.

Come the War on Democracy Friday, June 6, 7:30PM: Film: The War on Democracy

John Pilger's first major film for the cinema explores the historic and current relationship of Washington with countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile. Archival footage demonstrates how democracy has been wiped out in country after country in Latin America since the 1950's. At Joyce Beers Community Center

BLACKWATER ACTION ALERT!

1. CONTACT SAN DIEGO CITY OFFICIALS! On May 20 2008 in response to the City of San Diego denying the Blackwater mercenary company occupancy of their proposed new training center in Otay Mesa, Blackwater told the San Diego City Council "If we do not hear from you by close of business Friday, we will be forced to consider taking other steps to enforce and protect Blackwater’s rights" after stating that it was their right to train people in counter insurgency operations whether the city and the people want them here or not. We need to send letters immediately to the city council and other city officials telling them not to let Blackwater bully them! For e-mail addresses and a sample letter, please go to www.prcsd.org and Click on the "No Mercenaries" button. You will then see a red "Action Alert" notice in the left hand column. You know what to do!

2. JOIN US ONCE AGAIN AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING on Tuesday, May 27, 10 a. m., 202 C St., downtown San Diego. Since the City Council has yet to place Blackwater as an agenda item, we will speak during the public comment section asking them what action they will be taking and urging them not to cave in to Blackwater.

3. AUTHOR JEREMY SCAHILL WILL RETURN TO SAN DIEGO ON TUESDAY, JUNE 10 for a lecture and book signing of his revised and updated "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army," which is being released in paperback June 1. Join us for this program at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 4190 Front St. (Hillcrest) and help us spread the word to others! A flier and more details are available at www.prcsd.org Click on Jeremy's picture! More Info

Dear Peace Community! Several ASD Members attended this on opening night and loved it - and it is outstanding! . Don't miss this one! Happy Songs About The War A new musical, one-man show

Sunday, May 25, 2008 - Wednesday, May 28, 2008 and Sunday, June 1- Wednesday June 4; at 7 p. m.

6th@Penn Theatre in Hillcrest

Like any major event or political situation, we little folks’ll probably never know exactly how it all went down. But Happy Songs About The War—the new musical, one-man show written and performed by San Diego singer/songwriter JD Boucharde—was born out of a sincere desire to shed some light on the difference between why we were told we went to war with Iraq, and why we actually did. And, more importantly perhaps, to spread the message of non-violent communication to whomever has ears to listen.

The show uses multimedia, humor and a score of original songs to illuminate what the artist believes to be the truth of U. S. involvement in the Iraq War; and its message of non-violent communication at every level of human interaction elevates the show above its timely topic of the war. More Info
