“There are a lot of issues in politics you can spin on. You can spin on tax cuts; and spin on Social Security; and he said-she said; this view, that view; right-left-center. You can’t spin on this. People see it. They feel it. They smell it. And you can’t say something that conflicts with the harsh reality of what happened there."

-- Tim Russert (1950-2008) on Katrina

ASD News and Views

ASD was founded on the premise that left-progressives would be better and stronger if our different movements would understand each other and collaborate or combine efforts when ever possible. It looks like inadvertently Blackwater will be helping us do that. Activist San Diego was honored to be a part of last week’s well-attended Jeremy Scahill speaking event at the UCC and also at the demonstration at Blackwater’s “Naval Training Facility” in Otay Mesa where Jeremy Scahill also spoke.

ASD was also represented at a preliminary meeting of San Ysidro community leaders who were concerned about Blackwater moving into their historically Mexicano neighborhood. Like the early citizens meetings in Potrero, these folks were astounded to hear the history of Blackwater as told to them first hand by Jeremy Schahill. We need to spread the word about the dangers of Blackwater and other war profiteers to the peace movement to this and other communities as well..

ASD also sees an opportunity to link the cause of border justice and immigration rights to the efforts of peace and justice activists struggling to oust Blackwater from its new location in the shadow of the TJ airport and the international fence. We see a link between Blackwater’s racist behavior post-Katrin, and the racially inflammatory danger they represent in the majority-Latino community of San Ysidro. Blackwater has the potential to play a destructive political role in undermining the cultural, lingual and ethnic relations, which shape the poorest and most racially segregated city in San Diego County.

We invite you to join with ASD, PRC and the SDCPJ to build a powerful Stop Blackwater coalition to drive the trainer of privately funded terrorists out of our community. Please call us at 619-528-8383 or info@ActivistSanDiego.org

Food for Thought

It is absolutely striking how language in pending S. 1959, "The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act" appears to mirror some of Hitler’s Discriminatory Laws the Fuhrer signed in 1933.

-- Compare Text in “Hitler’s Laws” with Pending U.S. Senate Bill S.1959

"Gasoline prices reached a national average of $4 a gallon for the first time over the weekend, adding more strain to motorists across the country. But the pain is not being felt uniformly. Across broad swaths of the South, Southwest and the upper Great Plains, the combination of low incomes, high gas prices and heavy dependence on pickup trucks and vans is putting an even tighter squeeze on family budgets."
