“If money is wanted by Rulers who have in any manner oppressed the People, they may retain it until their grievances are redressed, and thus peaceably procure relief, without trusting to despised petitions or disturbing the public tranquility.”

A creeping police state

Chris Hedges, at a PRC event co-sponsored by ASD, spoke about his new book "Collateral Damage" where evidence for American war atrocities comes from his interviews with US soldiers. The audience of 100+ were moved by his presentation and his comments that "America is just one or two 'terroist' attacks away from a police state."

The truth of this comment along with last weeks' vote in Congress on the FISA Amendments Act , which gives blanket immunity for telecom corporations for illegally handing over millions of phone calls and emails to the government (more info). Chris Hedges is right, except that the Bush Administration is not waiting for another terrorist attack to carve up our democratic rights. Neither Democratic or Republican presidential candidates are taking the FISA danger seriously. We are left wondering when the next shoe will drop. Let the candidates know that that a vote for FISA will be viewed as a betrayal of our trust and a betrayal their duty to uphold what's left of the Constitution.

Food for Thought

The private military company Blackwater has found an unusual way to skirt federal laws that prohibit private parties from buying automatic weapons. Blackwater bought 17 Romanian AK-47s and 17 Bushmasters, gave ownership of the guns to the Camden County sheriff and keeps most of the guns at Blackwater's armory in Moyock. ... Under federal law, it is illegal for a person to receive or possess an automatic weapon that is not registered to that person in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

A group with the regal-sounding name of the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco is planning to ask voters here to change the name of a prize-winning water treatment plant on the shoreline to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant. The renaming would take effect on Jan. 20, when the new a president is sworn in. And regardless of the measure’s outcome, supporters plan to commemorate the inaugural with a synchronized flush of hundreds of thousands of San Francisco toilets, an action that would send a flood of water toward the plant, now called the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant.
