| For
a Humanistic US Foreign Policy
We,
as Americans, deserve to have ourselves represented
internationally as a caring, sensitive, sensible people!
We want foreign assistance, given on our behalf, to
actually improve the lives of those living in poverty,
suffering with preventable diseases, and unable to educate
their children. But, as presently administered, our
foreign aid is often ineffective and inefficient.
An
impressive array of experts and organizations have concluded
that U. S. foreign aid programs need reform. (See list
at end of article - www.results.org).
Legislation,
including House Resolution 1268, is currently proposed
to overhaul and update U. S. foreign aid so that programs
are effective and efficient with measurable outcomes
and focused on ending poverty. Accountability for funds
and their use must also be a key component of any assistance.

Activist Film Series continues to draw sizable crowds
eager to discuss the content of the films and what we
can do about the problem. Thus was the case last Friday
as we showed Orwell Rolls in his Grave, a film about
how the media distorts its own roll using misinformation
and propaganda. Our next movie is the 1st Fri. of Sept.
- A Force More Powerful: A Century of Nonviolent Conflict.

| HR
1268 to Modernize Foreign Assistance; CALL YOUR CONGRESSIONAL
REPRESENTATIVE NOW. Often we wonder - what can we
do about all the poverty, disease, misery in the world?
There is something you can do. Globally, nearly one
billion people struggle to survive on less than $1 a
day. Nearly half the world attempts to survive on less
than $2 a day. Our foreign aid program is in need of
major reform. Reform efforts should assure that the
goal of foreign aid is reducing poverty and that our
investment yields measurable, cost-effective results.

The
McCains additionally have 3 condos in San Diego County
alone - two in Coronado, and one of them in La Jolla
(where they happen to owe back taxes.) While McCain
lectures homeowners who foreclose about being "irresponsible,"
maybe he should pay the $1,742 that San Diego County
says he still owes.

AUGUST
15 – SEPTEMBER 14: Fridays & Saturdays 8 PM,
Sundays 2 PM: The Joy Luck Club adapted from the Amy
Tan novel, tells the story of four Chinese-immigrant
mothers and their relationships with their American-born
daughters. The play is made up of vignettes, which look
deep into the Chinese pasts of the mothers and then
shift back to the present day. The mothers share a sense
of failure at being unable to connect with their daughters,
and the sacrifices they made in order to come to America
are played out like ghosts that come back to haunt them.
