ASD News and Views

Being Unconventional:

As we watched the conventions many of us felt quite unconventional. The events give the two ruling parties 4-days of prime time to speak to the American people. There is manipulative calculation in their methods and in the way they tell us a version of the reality. Until we hear from sources like Amy Goodman and Democracy Now! we get few insights into the stories behind the fabrication. At the conventions there is no evidence of debate or discussion, almost no chance for the rank and file to express themselves, no vestiges of democracy in action. And worst of all that the media is complicit in the presentation of this spectacle; letting it pass without delving behind the curtain.

San Diego's lack of a critical media is just one more reason why we need media justice work to begin in earnest. The Foundation for Change has presented Activist San Diego and several other organizations with a grant to develop our web capabilities and to continue our quest to establish two new FM community radio stations. If we get construction permits from the FCC we will then need to raise another $200,000 to get on the air, but it will be one of the several actions needed to bring more "unconventional" social justice perspectives to our community. Please call us and let us know if you would like to be informed and involved in ASD's media justice work.

Hope to see you Monday at 7 PM at the ASD General Meeting as we take up Prop 7 and some other critical propositions on the California ballot.
