I hate war for its consequences, for the lies it lives on and propagates, for the undying hatreds it arouses.

ASD News and Views

Quite often and to many, activism issues of social and political significance can feel a bit overwhelming due to its global nature, cultural reference, or its sheer complexity. It becomes the role of local activist groups to expose, educate, and organize with the communities where the corporate mass media fails to provide.

Growing your own or buying locally grown produce is one simple mode of activism that we can all participate in without feeling overwhelmed. If you feel like you are losing control to the large corporations, this is one activity that you can reclaim it back. With the rising transportation costs which the large corporation will pass on to you, it is becoming very apparent that locally produced foods are becoming more cost effective. You can also control what goes into what you eat. By eliminating pesticides and other harmful chemicals, and choosing organics, we are doing our planet and our bodies a favor.

San Diego Food Not Lawns is a grassroots group based in San Diego focused on offering information, facilitate communication, and otherwise act and effect local change regarding a variety of food and land related issues. Check them out on their website at sdfoodnotlawns.com. They have a lot of information and local activities regarding localization of the foods we eat.

If you want to bypass the large corporate grocery stores, how about visiting a local farmers market. Check out San Diego Farm Bureau’s web site. They will provide you all the local farmers markets locations and dates where you can buy directly from the local farms.

You can also support a CSA ( Community Supported Agriculture). This is where you buy directly from the farm with a subscription. You can check out the local CSA from the San Diego Farm Bureau’s site
