October Surprise in Extraordinary Times

Many of us were expecting an “October Surprise” which would suddenly create enough fear to turn the tide of anti-administration sentiment back into blind compliance with the status quo. Would Osama Bin Laden again explode onto the scene just days before the election? Instead of an explosion there has been a massive implosion. The myths of the free market, deregulation, US economic dominance and capitalist invincibility have tumbled and crumbled. Are we on the doorstep of a financial collapse as profound as that of 1929? This probably is the greatest opportunity for left-progressives to propose a new paradigm in our lifetime. This is the ultimate teachable moment.

Are we ready to educate and lead by example? Lest we forget, both the left and the right can make gains from this crisis. The rightwing will blame the crisis on ACORN, foreign investors and “illegal” immigrants”, blame anybody except the existing ruling class. Certainly the Third Reich led working people towards war and fascism rather than towards a new economic democracy. For generations we have predicted the collapse of a system based on greed and monopoly. There has never been a more important time to commit ourselves to building a broad-based popular movement, a coalition for survival.

Join Activist San Diego on Monday night at 7 PM for one part of that mission, to expose voter fraud and the plan to steal the election again. More

Food for Thought

Because all revolutionaries know the basic scientific law which is correct everywhere - everything changes all the time! If today you are my oppressor - if it takes a thousand years, you will not be my oppressor because – everything changes all the time.

-- Kwame Toure, Unity speech Atlanta 1990. listen - KPFK Freedom Now Sept. 30 program

While New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was paying an ‘escort’ $4,300 in a hotel room in Washington, just down the road, George Bush’s new Federal Reserve Board Chairman, Ben Bernanke, was secretly handing over $200 billion in a tryst with mortgage bank industry speculators. Both acts were wanton, wicked and lewd. But there’s a BIG difference. The Governor was using his own checkbook. Bush’s man Bernanke was using ours.

-- Greg Palast on Eliot's Mess --The $200 billion bail-out for predator banks and Spitzer charges are intimately linked 14 Mar 2008

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 6PM: Stealing America: Vote By Vote. The American ideal is that every vote counts. Not true, according to this eye-opening documentary. For more than 20 years, exit polls accurately predicted U. S. election results. Over the last 10 years, that reliability has progressively disappeared. What’s going on? The last two presidential elections both came down to a relatively small number of votes, and in both elections the integrity of the voting process has been called into question. With the upcoming election looking to be similarly close, this film asks the questions: what happened in 2000 and 2004; what has changed since; and what can be done to ensure fair and honest vote counting? Dr. Pat Washington of UCSD will facilitate a discussion after the film. All programs are free and open to the public. Malcolm X Library 5148 Market Street. More Info
