"What's in a system? We in the United States have grown acclimatized to a system that first dehumanizes us and then inevitably feeds on our dehumanization, sucking away at our resources, our rights, and our resistance while we scamper frantically around in the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness."

ASD News and Views

Nearly 200 people were killed, 400 injured and millions of citizens' hearts were broken in a recent series of terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. All our hearts go out to the victims and their families. The terrorist groups have declared plans to assault other Indian cities. While these cities are being policed vigorously, Mumbai remains open, except for some vulnerable locations. The incidents have caused the increase of tensions between India and Pakistan and US may have to intervene.

As horrific as the attacks are, we should not forget that there is always the experience of injustice at a personal level why youth of today would join in these extremely violent terrorist groups, be it in Mumbai or Baghdad or New York City. We, the enlightened citizens of the world, can do and must do much to heal the gaping wound of religious divide that incidents such as these and 9/11 cause. We also have to stand guard against erosion of civil rights and prevent governments from using these incidents for turning countries into police states.

Food for Thought

"On Monday, hours before Obama's formal announcement of his economic team, USA Today explained that he is forming a Cabinet with 'records that display more pragmatism than ideology.' The ideology of no ideology is nifty. No matter how tilted in favor of powerful interests, it can be a deft way to keep touting policy agendas as common-sense pragmatism - virtuous enough to draw opposition only from ideologues. Meanwhile, the end of ideology among policymakers is about as imminent as the end of history."

-- Norman Solomon. The Ideology of No Ideology

~~~~~
"California officials will investigate accusations that the Mormon Church neglected to report a battery of nonmonetary contributions - including phone banks, a Web site and commercials - on behalf of a ballot measure to ban same-sex marriage. Roman Porter, the executive director of the Fair Political Practices Commission, which oversees California campaign finance laws, signed off on the investigation after reviewing a sworn complaint filed on November 13."
-- Inquiry Set on Mormon Aid for California Marriage Vote. Jesse McKinley, The New York Times
