Union-busting Grinch strikes again After his successful enterprise of stealing from the poor to give to the rich, George W's legacy is a country driven to the edge of economic and social collapse. And, he is not done yet. He and Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama have, with gusto and opportunism, assumed the mantle of the Grinch to steal from the auto employees and are trying to fulfill the capitalists' cherished dream of destroying the United Auto Workers union, which has, over 80 years, fought for fair wages, healthcare and benefits for its members.

This week, President Bush offered a bailout of the auto industry with the condition-"everyone will have to sacrifice". This is Bush's code word meant specifically for the UAW, which is being asked to move up contract negotiations, scheduled for 2011, to the end of 2009. UAW worker pay and benefits would then be made equal to that given to non-union foreign transplant employees working in places such as Shelby's own Alabama. Why does the bail out not include US CEOs lowering their pay to that of Japan's or Korean CEOs? This agreement gives General Motors and Chrysler $17 billion between now and February, after which " the Detroit Monkey" will be squarely on the shoulders of the Obama administration..

This retreat action by Bush, is specially designed to unravel completely after extracting UAW concessions, because the agreement does not have any mandates - in former Labor Secretary Robert Reich's words "everything will still be negotiable". Meanwhile GM plans to build 8 factories in China! www.bloomberg.com

Food for Thought

We no longer have a civilian-led government. It is hard for a lifelong Republican and son of a retired Air Force colonel to say this, but the most unnerving legacy of the Bush administration is the encroachment of the Department of Defense into a striking number of aspects of civilian government. Our Constitution is at risk.
