Celebrate Black History with activism

Black History is the history of America. It is a history of the color line; a way that our society remains stratified and strengthens the system of class divisions so that only a very few on the top could remain in control. The election of the first black US president does not significantly alter the dynamic of 300+ years of black history or the manner in which institutional discrimination continues to permeate all aspects of our society.

Black history is activist history, the long road to freedom marked by tens of millions of individual and collective acts, which broke the chains of bondage, of enslavement, of feudal ties to modern plantations, of democratic disenfranchisement and struggles today to break the structural inequality of this society. Looking at the indices of social and economic disparity it is easy to see that black History and American history must remain imbued with activism, if progress is to be made. Seeing a few black faces in the White House must not lull us. This is a time to push for definitive breakthroughs.

America is at its best when privileged sectors join in solidarity with the disenfranchised and unite for the common goals of all humanity; across color lines, national lines, and gender lines. May we all join together to make and shape black history and activist American history.

Food for Thought

For those of us who hope for a new peace loving, caring government, we need to be aware of forces that are still determined to force a fascist government upon us. We must stand firm and demonstrate for the Obama leaders that we insist that they work for the anti-war and social justice issues that we voted for--they must resist the capitalist status quo.

-- Chris Hedges: It's Not Going to be Ok

“It is outrageous that in the middle of a budget crisis and talk about various tax increases, the City of San Diego has increased salaries for city workers—so much so that the number of people earning $100,000 or more has jumped by 44% in the past year alone”

-- City Councilmember Carl DeMaio, www.cleanupcityhall.com

"I myself was lulled into a false sense of security upon my arrival a week ago. Indeed, security is 'better,' compared to my last trip here, when the number of attacks per month against the occupation forces and Iraqi collaborators used to be around 6,000. Today, we barely have one American soldier being killed every other day and only a score injured weekly. Casualties among Iraqi security forces are just ten times that number. But yes, one could say security is better if one is clear that it is better in comparison not to downtown Houston but to Fallujah 2004"

-- Security in Iraq: Relatively Speaking, Dahr Jamail

LIBRARIES THREATENED AGAIN! Your help is needed now to help protect our Libraries as the City Council begins its budget preparation for Fiscal Year 2010. Budget & Finance Committee Chair Tony Young has scheduled meetings to solicit public input in preparation for the FY10 City budget. Most City departments have been asked to present the Mayor with budgets that show 15% cuts for FY10 (compared to the 10% budget cuts that were sought in the mid-term FY09 budget adjustments). Library supporters must let the Committee and Council know that Library services must be protected. The February meetings will help the Committee prioritize City services as they consider budget cuts. Please try to attend these meetings and make it clear that all San Diego Public Libraries and services are essential! Sat., February 14 & 21st and Wed & Thur., February 25th & 26th. More Info
