ASD News and Views

A government "of the people, by the people and for the people" is an ideal worth struggling for. For the last several Bush administrations the right wing rhetoric claimed that the role government is to get out of the way so that society can have more freedom and liberty. Strange talk for these neocons that spied on us, raised an army of laws against working people, helped monopolize the economy and left us with a new version of the constitution... a government "of the corporations, by the corporations and for the corporations". The neocon version of government was nothing less than a naked instrument of class warfare.

Obama has come to the verbal defense of government as a tool to help the people on Main Street. But the "bailouts" and the "stimulus package" look like a lifesaver for the same capitalist institutions, financial and industrial, that created the economic meltdown in the first place.

Around the world, social movements have been proposing that "a new world is possible" and that a people's economy is necessary. Every San Diegan should be thinking about how we can learn from the latest Wall Street crime so that "of the people, by the people and for the people" will be the foundation that will prevent the next theft of our country's collective resources and future.

Please join us for a fabulous discussion and film "Occupation 101" about Gaza and Palestine on Monday, Feb 16th at the ASD General meeting.

And I just wonder, would either of you be willing to take the lid off and eat any of these products now... ?"

LIBRARIES THREATENED AGAIN! Your help is needed now to help protect our Libraries as the City Council begins its budget preparation for Fiscal Year 2010. Budget & Finance Committee Chair Tony Young has scheduled meetings to solicit public input in preparation for the FY10 City budget. Most City departments have been asked to present the Mayor with budgets that show 15% cuts for FY10 (compared to the 10% budget cuts that were sought in the mid-term FY09 budget adjustments). Library supporters must let the Committee and Council know that Library services must be protected. The February meetings will help the Committee prioritize City services as they consider budget cuts. Please try to attend these meetings and make it clear that all San Diego Public Libraries and services are essential! Sat., February 14 & 21st and Wed & Thur., February 25th & 26th. More Info
