| THE
WAR IS NOT OVER, MOBILIZE NOW!
John
Lennon had a wonderful anti-war campaign declared, “War
is Over”.
Most
Americans probably think that Obama’s pronouncements
that we are withdrawing from Iraq will mean that the
war is going to be over soon. Pleaeeze! War is leaving
50,000 troops in Iraq on huge military bases with tens
of thousands of military contractors to keep the oil
flowing under US auspices. What happens when the private
and religious armies stop receiving payments from the
US military? Occupation will always be a form of war
no matter what the level of hostilities.
While
troops may be shipped out of Iraq many will be deployed
into Afghanistan to maintain the occupation and increase
conflict. Afghanistan promises to drag the Obama administration
into the quicksand of regional warfare. Meanwhile the
generations-old occupation of Palestine and Gaza with
US tax monies. These 3 occupations fester as a raw wounds
in the Middle East.
It
is time for us to ramp up our activism and be increasingly
visible pushing Obama and our nation away from empire
and towards building a new people’s economy.
Next
Monday is ASD’s General Meeting. It will focus
on several aspects of war resistance including the defense
of Robin Long and keeping Blackwater on the defensive.
More
And
critical to the local peace movement, all-out support
for the Peace Mobilization on Sat. March 21st. All of
us must lend our hands, hearts and mind to make sure
that this march and rally will expresses our outrage
at the ongoing travesty. More

newly released memos from the Bush Justice Department
reveal a concerted strategy to cloak the president with
power to override the Constitution. The memos provide
'legal' rationales for the president to suspend freedom
of speech and press; order warrantless searches and
seizures, including wiretaps of US citizens; lock up
US citizens indefinitely in the United States without
criminal charges; send suspected terrorists to other
countries where they will likely be tortured; and unilaterally
abrogate treaties.

I
think essentially that the Leahy commission is an excuse
for non-prosecution. It’s essentially saying,
“Let’s put some stuff on the public record.
Let’s immunize people. And then,” as he
even said, “let’s turn the page and go forward.”
That’s really an excuse for non-prosecution.
