"When we are really honest with ourselves we must admit that our lives are all that really belong to us. So, it how we use our lives that determines what kind of men we are. It is my deepest belief that only by giving our lives do we find life."

ASD News and Views

If you are not outraged, you may not be paying attention.
AIG, the insurance giant, gave millions to political candidates who supported deregulation of the market place.
AIG grew rich in the deregulated, “free” market under the Bush Administration.
AIG insured millions of sub-prime home loans, fueling a huge housing bubble.
AIG took in billions in profits and paid billions to its top employees in bonuses.

…then came the economic meltdown fueled by failures of the sub-prime market.
AIG registered the largest corporate loss in world history -- $60 billion lost in 3 months.
AIG was declared “too big to fail” so US taxpayers were left to bail it out.
AIG got $170 BILLION of our tax money since November to prevent its collapse.
AIG corporate leadership was a colossal failure even in capitalist terms.

So imagine our surprise when we hear that;
AIG executives are scheduled to get $165 million in bonuses and some
AIG executives are getting up to $6 million in performance bonus checks.

As millions of hard-working home owners loose their houses and Millions of workers are losing their jobs because of greedy speculators, AIG thieves are getting millions in bonuses!?!

ASD asks, How can there be legal bonuses for illegal profits made on phony insurance policies that were not worth the paper they were written on? Do we understand the connections between the meltdown and the war? Why are we not out in the streets expressing our outrage? ASD hopes you will join us at the ASD General Meeting on Monday at 7 PM at Joyce Beers and at the March 21st Peace rally. For information call ASD at 619-528-8383 or info@ActivistSanDiego.org

Food for Thought

The system is broken. It’s geared for the employer. There is an imbalance of power, an inherent imbalance of power in the workplace. And if we’re going to lift this economy out of this crisis, caused by the same kind of deregulatory nonsense that James is saying this morning, we need to lift it from the bottom by putting more money into the pockets and hands of workers to spend in this economy, and that is by allowing them to bargain collectively with their employer.

-- Health care debate on Democracy Now! between Stewart Acuff of the AFL-CIO and James Sherk of the Heritage Foundation.
