ASD News and Views

Last weekend, the Earth Day was celebrated all over the world as it was in San Diego, with joy and trepidation. Our planet has been bountiful to us, has taught us many lessons and has, so far, survived our wanton acts of consumption, wasting of its resources and our callous indifference to the future of the planet as a thriving blue gem in the space. The inevitable Climate Change that has been caused by these human acts, is going to take its toll and a disproportionate burden is going to fall on the poor and those who live on the margins. Floods, droughts, failures of rains, loss of coastal land and just heat and cold will degrade the day to day lives of already poor people driving them to desperation, disease and death. The task of the activist has become more complex and more urgent. Activism needs to have a multi-pronged approach- (1) as advocacy to reduce greenhouse gas production to minimize or slow down climate change (b) ensuring social justice by advocating on behalf of the poorer section that will be disproportionately affected (c) promoting adaptability to a changed climate. This is acknowledged in a recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, where it concluded: that "a high priority should be given to increasing the capacity of…communities and social groups to adapt to climate change in ways that are synergistic with wider societal goals of sustainable development."

In San Diego area itself, water shortages will be severe, cost of water will rise to phenomenal values and desperate measures will be taken, It would be our work to protect the water rights of the people who will be marginalized by the shortages.

Food for Thought

"The threat of global warming can be significantly lessened if nations cut emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases by 70 percent this century, according to a new study. This would help reduce the most dangerous aspects of climate change, including massive losses of Arctic sea ice and permafrost and significant sea level rise, although global temperatures will still rise."

-- Environmental Leader: Global Warming Study: Nations Need to Cut Emissions by 70 Percent www.truthout.org/041709EA

~~~~~
"Major General Antonio Taguba called for an independent commission to investigate war crimes committed by senior members of the Bush Administration in remarks in Ames Courtroom on Tuesday, April 14. The event was sponsored by Physicians for Human Rights and the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School."
