Our Mother’s Day and Theirs

Save the spirit of Mothers Day! Like so many holidays, Mother’s Day has had its original meaning stripped away by conservative, corporate campaigns. Mothers Day was not created by Hallmark or by the proponents of religiously-based ‘family values’, but by Julia Ward Howe, a feminist, suffragist, peace activist, and author of “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” She wrote the 1870 Mother’s Day Proclamation

“Arise, then, women of this day!…

"We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies, Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."…

"Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."

In the years that followed the original 1870 proclamation, Mothers Day has been connected with the causes of sanitation and pollution, women’s rights, opposition to capitalism and public activism for peace and social justice. So let us buy fewer flowers and fewer mass-produced cards. Let us celebrate the protection of Mother Earth. Let us launch the mother of all peace & justice movements so that we not “…allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."….” Bring all the troops home now!

Honor Mother with Rallies in the Streets. The holiday began in activism; it needs rescuing from commercialism and platitudes. Read this for an enlightened history.
