ASD News and Views

Although the United States spent more on healthcare than any other developed nation in 2008, a report by the Commonwealth Fund ranked the U. S. last in healthcare quality among the 19 compared countries. The failure of our healthcare system comes as no surprise to most. In 2007, nearly 46 million Americans, a staggering 18 percent of the population, was without any medical coverage. The reality that nearly 8 out of 10 uninsured individuals come from working families – almost 70 percent from families with one or more full-time workers - leaves placing blame upon the uninsured as completely unfounded and unjust. Instead, the failure of American healthcare is clearly systemic - a result from the ruthless pursuit of profit over concern for the health of the population.

Regardless of the clear failing of American healthcare, and the much cheaper and efficient alternative, establishing a single-payer system remains off the table for the Obama administration. When questioned on single-payer, Obama responded: "We have historically a tradition of employer-based healthcare. And although there are a lot of people who are not satisfied with their healthcare, the truth is, is that the vast majority of people currently get healthcare from their employers, and you’ve got this system that’s already in place. We don’t want a huge disruption as we go into healthcare reform, where suddenly we’re trying to completely reinvent one-sixth of the economy.” Considering the "huge disruption" caused by the financial crisis and Obama's attempt to "reinvent" that sector of the economy through billions of dollars in bailouts, Obama's argument is a weak excuse masking his unwillingness to challenge the embedded interests of the healthcare industry - leaving families to suffer without coverage as the nation enters the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

And yet, those struggling for social justice must not let defeatist thinking overpower them. Although Obama has excluded single-payer advocates from participating in healthcare reform, activists must continue to use all tactics available to invigorate the health care movement and the social justice movement more broadly. On Monday, Activist San Diego's General Meeting will discuss the current state of healthcare reform, along with other important issues in a critical analysis of Obama's First 100 Days. Join us to help in building a people's movement that ensures all have the right to live a happy and fulfilling life - including full medical care!

Food for Thought

House voted 368 to 60 to spend billions more of our tax dollars ($96.7 billion) for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. .. Fifty-one courageous Democrats, however, did just that. "The pressure was intense," said freshman Cong. Donna Edwards. "But I just returned from Afghanistan and people there kept saying that the solution is not more troops but more development assistance."

The worst jobs reports in the last 30 years: The NY Times puts a smiley face on the jobs picture, but "... to those in the growing ranks of the unemployed, especially African Americans whose jobless rate rose to 15 percent in April. It is little comfort for the 17. 2 percent of black men now officially out of work, or the young African Americans who jobless rate now stands near 35 percent, over 10 points higher than it was last April.
