ASD News and Views

Memorial day started at the end of the Civil War as a day to remember the fallen Union soldiers. Gradually Memorial Day grew to include the fallen from all of America's wars. Many Americans will spend this day mourning the millions of lives lost. But it would be a terrible mistake to glorify war.

We should honor the sacrifices of those who serve without portraying war as something noble or even moral. Too often we mythologize war into an epic battle between good and evil, right and wrong, black and white. Unfortunately, such battles cannot be found outside of comic books and Hollywood movies. Rarely is the real world so simplistic. A more apt comparison would be an episode of Itchy and Scratchy, replete with scenes of senseless gratuitous violence, and no clear idea of who is on the moral high ground. After 8 years of fighting, we still don't know why Bush sent our soldiers to Iraq in the first place. According to the Iraq Body Count Project, between 89,000 and 97,000 civilians have died in the crossfire of our war of "liberation". Civilians are clearly the biggest losers in modern warfare.

Even soldiers lose in the arrangement. Armies are ordered into battle by leaders sitting in air-conditioned offices hundreds or thousands of miles away from the conflict. Is it any wonder that veterans suffer flashbacks, abuse drugs, and commit suicide while these leaders sleep soundly at night, as if they were playing with toy soldiers and not men made of flesh and blood? How can we speak of glory when even the heroes of our mythology are haunted by the memories for the rest of their lives? Who truly wins in war?

So spend Memorial day mourning for the millions of people that have died and pray for a better future with wars that are less frequent, less violent, and more honest. Together we can work to ensure that fewer people have to experience the horrors of war.

Food for Thought

Historical amnesia is a dangerous phenomenon, not only because it undermines moral and intellectual integrity, but also because it lays the groundwork for crimes that still lie ahead.
