Isn't it about time we took our principles seriously?

Some say that this once great nation has falling away from it's principles it was founded upon. Many people on the Left and the Right hold that there is a serious erosion to our constitution taking place with policies and practices that are a direct contravention of the Amendments and the Bill of Rights. However, many who have studied beyond the high school history text book will point to the fact that if such principles and protected freedoms are rooted in the founding of this country, they didn't sprout for everyone (the indigenous, indentured servants, slaves, African Americans, women, workers, immigrants, etc.).

Why is this? Because the institutions of power have historically been controlled by the kind of people who wrote the Constitution and Bill of Rights and they have not forgotten its meaning nor who it was written for; the owning class. Understanding this, is essential to realizing that there is a big difference between the 'ideology' of the United States and the reality of the United States (or the disconnect between the United States professed theory and actual practice).

A wise professor once said, you are not really educated until you have read The Prince by Machiavelli (principle techniques for the strategy and tactics of dividing and conquering as a way to control people) and essays numbers 10 and 51 from the Federalist Papers (James Madison's description of the proposed U. S. governing system's design to appear democratic and equitable to the masses while actually being always protective of the owning class' interests).

Understanding the thesis of these texts gives us the ability to realize that as much as we put hope in the hierarchy of the most powerful institutions in this country (government, corporations, financial institutions, etc.), there is something stacked against us and our efforts to make the principles of this country real. And that if we organize in an attempt to make our lives better based on the ideology of American freedom as opposed to the reality of American freedom, we are likely to put our efforts into a practice that is set up to only recreate a freedom and equality that is not real but part of America's ideology.

Knowing about our history is essential to being effective in our analysis and understanding of what we as working and caring U. S. citizens seek to challenge in this current context of the owning class' financial plunder of our money and resources. Radical social movements have always sought the root of the problems they address. And they have based their practice/organizing on the principles that most people in this country believe to be the defining features of why they think of their selves as Americans.

Confronting the hard to look at truth of the disconnect between U. S. mentality and U. S. reality can help to achieve the collection of goals we seek in our effort to build a future that is based on a vision of making our principles real. If not now, when…; if not this way, how…? Let's do something if you really want to make America real…..

Food for Thought

At the same time, Israelis must acknowledge that just as Israel’s right to exist cannot be denied, neither can Palestine’s. The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements. This construction violates previous agreements and undermines efforts to achieve peace. It is time for these settlements to stop.
