Lerner will speak on the role of liberal and progressive politics in the era of Obama and what that role must be to achieve U. S. and Global survival. He will show what a progressive alliance between religious, secular, and the growing sector of “spiritual but not religious” Americans can achieve for a fundamental transformation and healing in American and global society. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16: Hateful Phelps Followers Coming to San Diego! The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) announced it will be protesting at several locations throughout San Diego County. Founded in 1955 by controversial pastor Fred Phelps, members of the congregation commonly protest against homosexuality and often picket funerals of soldiers and those who have died of AIDS. The church's most high-profile protest came at the 1998 funeral of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student who was killed because he was gay. Congregants gathered outside the church held up signs saying “No Fags in Heaven” and “God Hates Fags.” Among the list of protest sites is San Diego High School 1405 Park Blvd, which directly precedes the SDCPCJ "NO WAR in AFGHANISTAN" protest -- also downtown at the Federal Building from 4-6pm. Federal Building, Front St. and Broadway, Downtown San Diego Join with the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice and others around the country to oppose the war and occupation in Afghanistan. The SDCPJ is calling for: End the Occupations: Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine Healthcare, Jobs and Education, No to War and Occupation. We urge all groups and individuals opposed to the war in Afghanistan (soon entering its ninth year) to join us on October 16. Bring your own signs and banners. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, NOON: Unveiling Of Chicano History Mural. UC San Diego is unveiling a Chicano history mural by world-renowned San Diego-based artist Mario Torero. The art project was commissioned to celebrate UC San Diego's diversity and reflect the real communities of California. The mural is a temporary installation on canvas. It will hang in Peterson Hall during the fall quarter through Dec. 12; afterwards it will be available for future installations. WHERE: Peterson Hall. More Info
