Where: University of San Diego Peace & Justice Theatre 5998 Alcala Park San Diego. “The Jesuit Massacre: Prospects for Justice, 20 Years Later.” Carlos Mauricio, a former professor at the University of El Salvador and himself a survivor of police torture in El Salvador, who successfully sued the generals responsible for his torture, will speak about the Jesuit massacre case. The Rev. Marta Benavides, a Salvadoran human rights activist who worked closely with martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero, and is a 2009 participant in IPJ’s Woman PeaceMaker program, will provide comments from her own experience in the area of historical memory. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 7PM: Two-Time Pulitzer Winner Nicholas Kristof to Speak on Worldwide Oppression of Women. Kristof, a columnist with The New York Times, will speak on "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide" at the University of California San Diego Price Center Ballroom West. The event is free and open to the public with no tickets or reservations required. Kristof will talk about his journey through Africa and Asia and his encounters with women struggling in dire circumstances and those who, despite their own suffering, are providing hope and help to others. Where: University of San Diego Peace & Justice Theatre 5998 Alcala Park San Diego. “The Spanish Civil War Memory Project: Ending 60 Years of Silence” Luis Martin-Cabrera, Ph. D., assistant professor of Literature at UCSD and the principal investigator of the project, along with undergraduate students involved in the project’s field work, will discuss, and will present film clips of survivors’ testimony. Ambassador to Israel and Clinton administration advisor Martin Indyk takes us inside the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Arab palaces and Israeli offices, and demonstrates how Americans fail to grasp Middle Eastern leaders’ thought processes.
