Obituary

Susan West Friedman

tireless activist was passionate about righting social injustices

Whether she was marching for civil rights in the 1960s, demonstrating against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or advocating for marriage equality, Susan West Friedman was never content to wait for others to make the changes that she believed necessary.... Food for Thought

As I see it, democracy is the main issue in the governance of our state. The two-thirds rules have an anti-democratic effect. Our legislature is currently under minority rule. One-third plus one - only 34 percent -of either the Assembly or Senate can block the will of the majority until their demands are met. This is undemocratic.

-- Dr. George Lakoff Professor of Linguistics, UC Berkeley: Ending Minority Rule in California: One Sentence Can Do It, www.truthout.org/092409A

~~~~~
“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest—a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”
-- Albert Einstei
