SAN DIEGO VETERANS FOR PEACE TO MARK THE BEGINNING OF THE TENTH YEAR OF WAR IN AFGHANISTAN WITH AN "ARLINGTON WEST MEMORIAL" IN FRONT OF THE USS MIDWAY MUSEUM DOWNTOWN

Who: San Diego Veterans For Peace, Hugh Thompson Memorial Chapter #91, 100 veterans and associates

When: Saturday and Sunday, October 9th-10th 8 AM Saturday until Sunset on Sunday

Where: Front lawn area of the USS Midway Museum, Broadway and Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA

What:

The local San Diego chapter of the national group Veterans For Peace, working with members of Vietnam Veterans Against The War (VVAW), will mark the beginning of the 10th year of war in Afghanistan (start date: October 9th, 2001) by setting up an Arlington West Memorial, in honor of the service men and women who have fallen in this conflict. The Arlington West Memorial, modeled after Arlington Memorial Cemetary in Arlington, VA, will display crosses and symbols of other major religions, to honor the over 1300 service personnel killed to date in the Afghanistan conflict. Veterans of all five services will arrive early and beginning setting out the crosses/symbols in front of the USS Midway, with volunteers from all over San Diego assisting. The memorial will remain up and available to the public all day. At sunset, a candle will be placed at each cross/religious symbol, and an honor guard of veterans will spend the night at the memorial. The memorial will continue in place on Sunday, and will be removed after sunset. Names and brief biographical information of the fallen will be read both days by veterans and interested volunteers, and there will be information provided to the public about the overall costs of war. In additon, members of the San Diego Veterans For Peace chapter and members of the Vietnam Veterans Against The War (VVAW) will also be providing food and bottled water to the homeless veterans and non-veterans who live in the area surrounding the USS Midway.

Why:

San Diego Veterans For Peace, Hugh Thompson Memorial Chapter #91, approximately 100 veterans and asociate members, is the local chapter of the 501-C-3 veterans educational and humanitarian organization, Veterans For Peace, and believes that increasing the public awareness of the overall costs of war is the best way to end the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, while preventing the next war. The Arlington West Memorial, by its scope and size, offers the public a glipse into the number of service personnel killed to date in Afghanistan, and honors each of our brothers/sisters who has fallen.
