Film Event: Knowledge is the Beginning

"Knowledge is the Beginning" is the story of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, where young Arabs and Jews perform and live side by side. It is a film about what music can do; the way it can transcend cultural barriers, bring people together, defeat prejudice and overcome religious and political differences. This orchestra overcame the impossible to play in Palestine
and the Live-Concert from Ramallah attracted world wide attention far beyond the musical community. For Daniel Barenboim, founder of the ensemble, the orchestra is a symbol for what could be achieved in the Middle East.

Barenboim established the Orchestra with the late Palestinian writer Edward Said in order to bring together young musicians from across the political divide in the Middle East. Their hope was that music would heal and help to bring understanding and tolerance of different beliefs and cultures. The award-winning documentary describing this project from its beginning in 1999, “Knowledge is the Beginning” was produced and directed byPaul Smaczny. The triumphal culmination of this project is illustrated in "The Ramallah Concert" which is a live recording at the Palace of Culture in Ramallah, 21 August 2005. This second film will be shown on Sunday, August 20th. Same time and place. Both events are sponsored by Jewish Voice for Peace, San Diego Chapter.

Both events are being held at the Malcolm X Library, 5148 Market St., San Diego 92114 and are open to the public.
