No Border wall - need Bridges.jpg

support of San Diego City Councilmember Georgette Gomez's "Resolution in Opposition to the Border Wall" (http://docs.sandiego.gov/councilcomm_agendas_attach/2017/bge_170802_2.pd...).

The City Council is set to vote on this resolution on September 19, and Gomez's office would like to have letters of support amassed as exhibits by September 5.

Please let me know -- by September 4 -- if you are able to add your name (and the name of the People Power group you represent) to this letter.

Sorry for the late notice, but hope you can participate.

Thanks!

Wendy

Dear Councilmember Gomez,

We are San Diego residents from many different neighborhoods, including Hillcrest, Mission Beach, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Scripps Ranch, South Park, El Cerrito and San Carlos, and representing over 3,500 People Power members from all over the city and county. We are writing in strong support of your "Resolution in Opposition to the Border Wall", with hopes that this resolution will be unanimously approved by the San DIego CIty Council.

We believe that any expansion of the border is extremely misguided and unnecessary, and in this view, we are joined by the majority of San Diegans (San Diego Union Tribune, 1/25/17, "Poll: San Diegans oppose border wall, don't expect Mexico to pay for it").

What would expansion of the border wall, as proposed by the Trump administration, accomplish? It would needlessly increase tensions with Mexico, endangering San Diego's trade, cultural, physical and economic relationships with our border neighbor. It would be an unfathomably large waste of tax payer money. And it would cause environmental damage.

Your resolution sends a message to San Diegans, to Americans, and to the rest of the world that we believe that our prosperity, our culture and our economy are dependent and enhanced by building bridges with Mexico -- not by erecting barriers between us. Thank you for giving voice to what we are feeling.

Sincerely,
