statue of Christopher Columbus stands at the Chula Vista “Discovery” Park, on Kumeyaay Land - Jan. 23![]() ![]() 01/23/2020 - 5:30pm 01/23/2020 - 7:50pm A statue of Christopher Columbus stands at the Chula Vista “Discovery” Park, on Kumeyaay Land, as a stark reminder of the horrendous acts inflicted on Indigenous Peoples. Kumeyaay and Indigenous community members and organizations have joined in solidarity since October 2019 to demand that the Chula Vista City Council remove the statue and that the park be renamed by the Kumeyaay community. The Chula Vista city council has relegated this important task to the Human Relations Commission that has in turn scheduled a meeting to discuss the letter they received from us in last October that outlined the many reasons why the statue must be removed, along with our recommendation to re-name Discovery Park. Join us as we voice our outrage over the ongoing efforts to whitewash genocide and the violent uprooting of our communities from ancestral lands! The People United Shall Never Be Defeated! Union Del Barrio, Original Peoples Alliance, American Indian Movement (AIM) When: Thursday, Jan. 23 // 5:30PM Where: City Hall, Building A // Executive Conference Room 103 // 276 Fourth Ave, Chula Vista Why: We will no longer stand aside while settlers erase our existence and whitewash history » |
