Invitation to support COVID Memorial Project: "In Memory/En Memoria"

I hope you and your family and friends are staying healthy and safe.

In honor of those who are not: Please review this information about the Coronavirus Victims Memorial project, and consider sharing it with friends and organizations that may wish to participate on behalf of a loved one lost to COVID, or become a community partner to support this effort:

"In Memory/En Memoria" is a project to honor the memory of those who have died of the coronavirus in the binational San Diego/Baja California region. It evolved from conversations between friends, activists, organizers and others who have expressed concern that the majority of those dying from COVID in San Diego County are Latinos, and many low-income workers who are not being memorialized due to lack of resources.

Our goal is to raise awareness about these deaths, and support the survivors of those who have died. Many are experiencing grief and mourning the loss of a loved one due to COVID-19, while struggling to find ways to memorialize their lives.

Throughout October we will be working to organize public art exhibitions to pay tribute to the deceased and raise awareness of their deaths from COVID. This could include murals, tributes, and day of the dead altars.

We will be asking individuals to create their own altars, as well as partnering with community organizations who will create public altars/tributes around the weekend of November 1.

Cynara Velazquez has created a website for this project and included an online database of individuals who have passed away in our binational region, putting names, faces and biographies to this tragedy.

Some of these names come from friends and family. Others were found in public notices, news reports, and GoFundMe pages.

This website is still being enhanced - we plan on offering a Spanish language version as well.

If you are aware of anyone who has passed away from COVID 19 in our binational region, and would like to add them to this website- we would love to honor their memory here as well. Their biography can be submitted here:

The website also provides informational resources to grieving families and to long haul COVID survivors.

We are looking for community partners, because we want this to be an inclusive community effort to support the families of all victims. We would love to work with any organization or individuals that would like to participate with these efforts or with whom we can partner with to support their victims' memorial efforts.

Please let us know if you would like to be a partner in these efforts!

Please share this information with others, or let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you- stay well!
