Flash by Jim Miller on AK Press

Renowned Latin American Scholar and Ben Reitman Award Winner, Forrest Hylton(author of "Evil Hour in Colombia" on Verso Press), will be here from Bogota, Colombia reading from his new novel "Vanishing Acts" to be released from City Works Press on October 2nd at 3:00 in the Saville Theatre at City College. "Vanishing Acts" traces the arc of descent of a young American anthropologist, Richard Melville, as he tries to navigate the shifting currents of intrigue and seduction churning around him in Medellin, Colombia. Forrest Hylton teaches history and politics at la Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá), and is the author of several works of non-fiction, including the acclaimed "Evil Hour in Colombia" (Verso Press, 2006). His short fiction and translations have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail. Currently, he lives in Bogotá, Colombia for most of the year.

Jim Miller, co-author of "Under the Perfect Sun: The San Diego Tourists Never See" with Mike Davis, will be reading from his new novel, "Flash" (AK Press) with music by the inimitable Gregory Page at 5:00 in the Saville Theatre at City College. From the jacket description of "Flash": Jack Wilson is a scrappy city journalist bouncing from one alt weekly to the next, trying to eek out a living in the midst of the economic crisis and play role model to his college-aged son. A chance encounter with a faded Wanted poster in a San Diego library sends Jack deep into the wilds of California's hidden history, in search of outlaw revolutionary Bobby Flash. As Jack tracks Flash through the I.W.W. Free Speech Fights, the Magonista Revolt, and the first red scare, he uncovers the real story of a forgotten revolutionary world and learns something about the importance of family in the process. As Mike Davis puts it: “This remarkable novel is nothing less than a secret history of California—a radical past that might yet redeem our future.”

City Works Press will also be releasing and featuring a reading from "Mamas and Papas: On the Sublime and Heartbreaking Art of Parenting" edited by Kelly Mayhew and Alys Masek at 4 pm in the Saville Theatre that day. See www.sdcitybookfair.com for more information.

This AK Press/City Works Press event is a fundraiser for the publishers--all proceeds from these books' sales will go back into helping other writers get published.
