More about Mary Burton Riseley: Riseley returned to the U. S. from Baghdad on March 7. She became familiar to many New Mexicans because her dispatches were published in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Silver City newspapers and read on local radio and TV stations. They were also distributed by e-mail friendship networks to hundreds of readers around the U. S. and abroad.
While in Iraq, Riseley worked with children at a Baghdad cancer hospital and witnessed the crisis in health and well being throughout the country caused by twelve years of crushing economic sanctions imposed on Iraq by the United Nations in 1990. She also witnessed the reactions of the Iraqi people to the increasing threat of war.
Thirteen members of the Iraq Peace Team remained in Baghdad through the past weeks of war to report on their experiences during the violence of invasion and the recent chaos.
Riseley's talk will include an update of activities of Iraq Peace Team members still in Iraq, as well as a discussion of the challenges that lie ahead for the Iraqis and for Americans who wish to help preserve the integrity of the U. S. as a peace loving nation.
