Tend the land 8-11, skills share and lunch 11-12 
This month we will have Palestine Pals San Diego who will cover how to be an ally in the liberation of Palestine. We will explore how to leverage your skills to advocate and organize actions/events for Palestine and all oppressed peoples.

Palestine Pals San Diego started in San Diego, CA in October of 2023. They are a fully volunteer based organization seeking to spread awareness and support of Palestine. Their mission is to unite and empower a global community in support of Palestine, advocating for the rights and well-being of its people through education, community engagement, and grassroots initiatives. By fostering a diverse and inclusive family of allies, they aim to amplify palestinian voices, address historical and ongoing injustices, and work towards a future of peace and equity.

Come join us for a day of weeding, harvesting pruning and learning through community connection. Lunch will be served, please bring your own food container and utensils to minimize waste!

In this solo performance monologue, performance artist and writer Guillermo Gómez-Peña presents a selection of classic texts from his vast “living archives” alongside recent work written over the past four years. This performance represents the fruits of the artist’s life’s work in all its iterations.

“My current performance represents the fruit of my life’s work in all its iterations: live performance, lecturing, archiving, literary work, mentoring, community activism, all coming together to address the dangers of the times we live in with its disregard for human life and insidious undermining of democracy.

At this time in my life I am thinking as much about legacy as I am trying to continually produce socially conscious experimental artwork that is simultaneously plugged into the national debates. I have learned from decades of touring performance material to locations beyond the Border that a call to action - in the form of a work of art - has the power to elicit compassion and inculcate a desire for social justice.

For me performance art is a form of radical democracy and citizenship which depends on the presence of the audience/community to succeed. I view my approach to creating this hybrid piece as “performing the archives” for multiple contexts: The art world, academia, community and the media. I am particularly interested in connecting with a new generation of audience members who may not have been exposed to the history of my generation, performance art and the Chicano movement.”

A maّwal موّال (plural: mawawil) is a traditional, slow-paced Arabic vocal music genre characterized by emotional, improvised poetry focusing on themes like love, longing, or daily life. The mawal is improvised, spontaneous and an expression of truth sung in colloquial language. It’s raw, authentic, and comes from the heart rather than being polished or perfect. Just as the mawal singer shares their personal story through melody around a gathering, Mawal Mic creates that same communal space where voices can be heard without judgment. The connection runs deeper than just the name: both forms value emotional authenticity over technical perfection, create sacred space for vulnerability, and preserve the ancient tradition of oral storytelling in contemporary settings. We honor our cultural roots while providing a modern platform where every voice from our Black and Brown communities finds its place in the collective story.

Mawal Mic is an inclusive third space centering perspectives that are often othered. Safe spaces like these matter deeply because they give us room to share our truths. It’s in these moments that we strengthen our voices, support one another, and build up our community. It’s where we remind ourselves and each other that we’re not alone in this.

Come speak, sing, listen, or simply breathe in the beauty of shared expression.

This is a third space that is committed to anti-racism, anti-z-ism, inclusion, and collective respect. We affirm and welcome people of all identities and maintain zero tolerance for discrimination or harassment of any kind.

The documentary film, “Comparsa”, fully immerses audiences in the intense world of Ciudad Peronia, Guatemala, where sisters Lesli and Lupe use art and performance to inspire local youth and heal deep wounds. Bob and I are sponsoring a showing of this incredible film. The entire amount of A SLIDING SCALE entry fee will be donated to Peronia Adolescente, as seen in the film.
 
After 41 girls are killed in a State-run “Safe Home” and the government refuses to act, the sisters respond with a community comparsa—an exuberant street performance featuring towering puppets, fire-breathing stilt walkers, and thundering drums. With brave vulnerability, they expose a system that permits and commits violence against women, and they open up about surviving violence in their own home.

Their youth movement takes to the streets, confronting corruption and reclaiming public space for women and girls. Rooting their efforts in joy and community care, they find healing for themselves along the way.

The tickets are $5.00 and up (plus a small processing fee to Crowdwork). Peronia Adolescente empowers the local youth of Ciudad Peronia in Guatemala by providing creative arts education and civic action opportunities to combat violence and inspire community healing.
